Gender Equality in Romanian Universities: “Alexandru Ioan Cuza” University of Iasi the first university in Romania that will implement structural transformations to achieve gender equality in science (STAGES)
Within a period of four years (2012-2015) the “Alexandru Ioan Cuza” University in Iasiis the first university in Romania that carries out a complex project aiming at implementing structural transformations to achieve gender equality in its academic and research community and at correcting the horizontal and vertical segregation.
Through the STAGES project (Structural transformations to achieve gender equality in science) the “Alexandru Ioan Cuza” University of Iasi, the oldest in Romania, will develop its tradition of excellence in science and research and, through the wide dissemination at national level it is foreseen a multiplying effect in Romania’s research and academic area.
The STAGES project is funded by the European Commission under the FP7programs Capacities, Science in Society and at “Alexandru Ioan Cuza”University is coordinated by Prof.dr Doina Balahur from the Research Center for Social Management and Community Development (CSMCD).
The implementing interdisciplinary team from the CSMCD brings together young and senior women in academic and research fields and key persons in the administrative departments. It shares a strategy of the transfer of knowledge and good practices from the European partner universities and research institutes with good results in gender equality towards the less experienced ones. Ambitious in scope the STAGES project is focused on several strategic areas that tackle the issue of gender in science and research organizations: women friendly environment, gender-aware science and women leadership in science.
